DN72317 is a stylish and compact British standard doorbell switch that replaces traditional round plastic bell pushes with a much larger wall switch (88×86mm) with the same design features as other switches in the DN72 series. This type of bell push is a momentary switch, meaning that it relies on spring-return action: depressing the switch activates the circuit and the doorbell rings, but when the switch is released, the spring mechanism breaks the circuit. This is unlike any traditional latching light switch in the market which remains in the position where it has been pressed. DN72317 is limited to only being able to conduct power when it is pressed, as is the case with bell pushes and signaling switches. The doorbell switch comes with one of three premium front panel materials to ensure that it can fit in with the look of your home: there is PC for large volume jobs; tempered glass, which will give the switch a luxurious glossy surface that will not show any fingerprints; or brushed aluminum for a more metallic and industrial look. Momentary vs Latching — Why the Difference Matters

A momentary push button works by allowing closure of the circuit only while it is pressed. As soon as it is released, the internal spring breaks the contact. This contrasts with a latching switch which stays in position after being activated. If one installs a regular DN72 switch in a bell circuit, the bell will either ring all the time or not ring at all. The wiring method is commonplace: connect the wire from the doorbell transformer to the common terminal; the wire to the chime should go to L1. There is no need for a neutral connection for the momentary mechanism. Remember to switch off the power supply at the consumer unit when working with bell transformers. For new installations, use 2-core cable from transformer to doorbell and from doorbell to chime position.
