BS 546 round pin switched sockets serve a different market than the better known BS1363 square pin standard type switched sockets. The BS 546 type is the original British Standard and is still used as the national wiring standard in South Africa, India and certain areas of the Middle East and Africa. BS 546 has been rated for 15A and has large round pins so that they can be used for appliance circuits as opposed to being used on general-purpose ring mains wiring. The R16431 is designed to meet this specification and has phosphor copper contacts of the right size, a robust switch mechanism and the same neon indicator that shows whether the socket is powered or not at a glance.
British Standard 15A Round Pin Switched Socket — BS 546, White PC Panel
R16431 is a round-pin socket manufactured to BS 546 standard (the British standard for 3 pin round pin plugs). This 15 amp round pin socket has the characteristic large diameter round openings for plugging into and the phosphor copper contacts to accept the thicker round pins of the BS 546 plug. Unlike the more modern BS 1363 square pin sockets, BS 546 sockets are intended for use with 15 amp circuits dedicated for appliances such as water heating systems, air conditioning units, industrial machinery and fixed light fixtures.
It has an integrated rocker switch with neon indicator for local power isolation. The R16431 has been manufactured by an exclusive manufacturer of 15 amp round pin sockets. The R16431 uses pure red copper internal switch components with Φ3.5mm×0.35mm silver alloy touch point and 0.7mm phosphorus contact material to provide optimal conductivity and retention of the pins. Four different colors of imported, high-transparency PC panel finishes are available: White, Gold, Grey, Black, and two different centre plate options; all products to BS 546 and with 12 year warranty.
We are a factory-direct round pin socket manufacturer offering competitive wholesale pricing, OEM branding on any color PC panel, and a 12‑year warranty across the R16 series range.
Phosphor Copper Contacts — Built for 15A Dedicated Circuits
The 15 amp switched socket uses phosphor bronze as the contact material. It has been specifically selected due to its excellent elasticity and conductivity when carrying 15 amps continuously. A socket may only supply power to appliances in a dedicated appliance circuit; however, an example is that it may supply power to a water heater or air conditioning unit and those two appliances will typically operate continuously at or above the rated amperage. While phosphor bronze provides excellent contact pressure and low resistance due to thermal expansion, standard brass contacts will eventually lose spring tension and therefore create increased resistance as the contact material expands. The integrated structure copper will also provide the highest degree of conductivity, as this provides a better electrical connection. The switch uses red copper and has a 3.5 mm X 0.35 mm silver alloy break point for the mechanical operation of the switch and the neon lamp in turn indicates that the appliance is ON. BS 546 certified, and includes a 12-year warranty from the manufacturer of the socket.
Matching the R16 Series — BS 546 Round Pin Socket Within the Same Aesthetic
The R16 Series includes this round white pin socket that is exactly the same size (86 × 86 mm) and made from the same high transparent PC panel, so there is a complete offer of four colour choices as with the other R16 Wiring Accessories. The R16431 15A Round Pin Socket can be used with the R16407 13A Round Pin Sockets and R16 light switches, which have different standards of sockets but use the same aesthetic of panel finish. The R16431 is available in White, Gold, Grey or Black. Therefore, there are two types of middle plates for the R16431: either a full plastic middle plate for standard installations; or, a steel-plastic combination middle plate for greater durability. The R16431 is BS 546 Certified and has a 12-year warranty.

BS 546 Round Pin vs BS1363 Square Pin: Understanding British Standard Sockets for International Markets
A practical guide to specifying the correct British standard socket for South Africa, India, and Commonwealth dedicated appliance circuits.
Where Is BS 546 Still Used?
South Africa: BS 546 15A round pin ‘sockets’ are the national standard for dedicated appliance circuits, i.e. Water heaters, Stoves, Air conditioning, and industrial equipment. They also provide a secure high current connection due to their large round pins. Use of the BS 546 remains prevalent in India alongside the newer IS 1293 standard, however, it is still commonly used for 15A appliance circuits, particularly for commercial installations. Legacy Commonwealth countries continue to refer to BS546 sockets and outlets as the standard for certain applications throughout; if you are exporting to these countries, the R16431 BS546 15A round pin switched socket will be the appropriate specification for any appliance connection at 15A.
15A Round Pin vs 13A Square Pin — Which Socket for Which Market?
The R16431 15A round pin socket (BS 546) is appropriate for South Africa, India and older Commonwealth countries, while the R16407 13A switched socket (BS1363) is valid for the UK, Ireland, the Middle East, GCC countries and Malaysia. These sockets are not physically interchangeable with each other — therefore BS1363 plugs will not fit BS546 sockets and vice versa. Carry sufficient stock of both products so that your business can provide customers with British wiring standards through one distributor.
Color Selection — White, Gold, Gray, or Black?
White PC panel: The British industry’s most commonly used general use finish is the classic version which can be used on both residential and commercial projects. The gold polycarbonate finish is appropriate for high-end residential or where you are going to have a very warm/mechanical look. The gray polycarbonate is perfect for neutral/contemporary modern apartment/office finishes. The black polycarbonate will provide a striking contrast and can be used on high-end commercial or industrial buildings. All four colours have the same imported, clear PC material and have a 12 year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BS 546 round pin socket used for?
The 15A type of dedicated circuits have been created specifically to provide power to 15A appliances that use BS 546, or circle pin plugs, in countries that have retained this specification, such as South Africa, India and certain Commonwealth countries. The R16431 product is a British standard, high amperage, round pin (15A) switched socket with neon for use with water heaters, air conditioning units, ovens and industrial equipment that require a reliable high current connection.
What is the difference between BS 546 and BS1363 sockets?
BS 546 uses circular pins and has a current rating of 15 Amps on dedicated appliance circuits; whereas BS1363 uses rectangular pins and has a current rating for 13 Amps on general-purpose ring mains. The two standards are not physically compatible, with one standard’s plugs not fitting into the other standard’s sockets. BS 546 is the country standard for South Africa, India, and some other countries within Africa; while BS1363 is the country standard for the UK, Ireland, the Middle East, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and Malaysia.
Can I use a BS 546 socket in the UK?
Domestic installations of the British Standard 1363 square pin plug (or UK standard) are used exclusively in the UK (BS1363). The UK domestic market will not be using the BS546 round pin plug for its electrical wiring and power supply. However, you will see BS546 sockets installed in some of the older (pre-1991) installations which typically would only have one socket per circuit, on the other hand, BS546 sockets will work with the South African, Indian, and other Commonwealth markets as these have round pin plugs in their respective countries.
What colors is this British standard 15A round pin socket available in?
The R16 Series 15 Amp Round Pin Switch Board Socket is available in 4 colors of Panel (PC), these are: White (traditional for homes & business), Gold (warm high quality for luxury looks), Grey (neutral & contemporary for modern installations), & Black (dramatic opposite of high quality commercial or industrial use). All four products are made of the same clear, strong, imported high quality clear plastic (PC) material with the same factory 12 year warranty.
