Key Features & Typical Use
Type E Earth in the Socket
The unique aspect of the French socket is that the earth pin is located in the socket instead of in the plug. This system is implemented in France and in countries that follow the French system, which explains why the socket adopted there cannot be replaced with a Schuko socket, where the earth is located elsewhere.
Compatibility in Practice
In practice, plugs from France and Germany can be used interchangeably between different types of plugs, meaning it is often possible not to think about the plug type when it comes to choosing one or the other. However, to be safe, it is better to specify the type of plug used in the region. So, in the regions where Type E is standard, or Type F in case of support of Schuko sockets, using those standards would be proper.
Contact Pressure over Time
The socket contacts are made of phosphor bronze, which is known for its spring ability, which helps maintain a firm grip on the plugs during years of use. Usually, loose contact is the main reason for replacing an outlet. Therefore, the material used for contacts is one of the few factors that influence the life of a socket.
Build the Plate Around It
Since the module measures 80 x 80mm, it can be used in any E10 frame of one to five gangs. This means that a French project can incorporate a socket into French USB modules, switches, or data modules and install multiple sockets in a single multi-gang frame, helping to keep the kitchen or office organized.

E10-017 – Choosing the French Socket for the Right Markets
The French Type E outlet appears very similar to Schuko on the wall and accepts many of the same plugs, which is precisely the reason it is used loosely. The difference is that, mechanically, the ground pin is inside the socket and goes into a hole in the plug instead of carrying ground contacts on its sides. The essence of using a specific format as opposed to a standard European outlet lies in meeting market standards.
Since both variants belong to the 80x80mm series for modules, a distributor working in different markets may have both available in the same container with frame system, while any project may have a single plate where rooms are utilized by visitors of various nationalities. French version is also offered in USB version E10-020, E10-021 as well as the covered version E10-023, so the same plate may be used without changing its design.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a French socket?
This is the Type E socket used in France and markets that follow the French standard. This socket in France has two round current pin holes and a protruding earth pin, which fits into a hole in the plug. The maximum rating for Type E plugs is 16 amperes at 250 volts, also the same as the Schuko format on this series.
Is the French socket compatible with a German plug?
Allowing for day-to-day practice, plugs used in France and Germany can generally be interchangeable with each other. However, if a proper specification were required, then the socket should conform with the way it is used in that particular country.
Can I use a French socket outside France?
Indeed, many markets comply with the French Standard and utilize Type E. It is important to verify the destination of the order since the same models may have the Schuko format for markets using Type F, and it will be possible to mix the two standards in one shipment — however, this must be indicated in the order.
What current and voltage is it rated for?
The 16A 250V rating of the module, as well as its components, is commonplace for its family of sockets. The system cables and protective devices must meet the design specifications rather than be determined solely by the socket itself.
Can a French socket share a frame with other devices?
Affirmative. This is an 80 x 80 mm module and it is compatible with E10 frame configurations with one to five gangs. The module can be arranged in a variety of different combinations including switches, data modules, USB ports or differing types of plug sockets on the same plate.
Can it be supplied with our brand on the plate?
Yes. Logo printing on the plate is available, along with custom carton and instruction sheet, and the plate colour can be specified according to the order. MOQ is on item basis and confirmed along with the quotation, depending on your configuration.
