British Standard 13A Multi Switched Socket — Phosphor Copper SP Wall Socket, White PC Panel
The R16407M is an upgraded 13A multi-switched socket that now has contacts made from high phosphor copper. This upgrade was engineered intentionally to ensure that the pins hold better in the socket and maintain their conductivity longer than the standard brass contacts. In addition to the high phosphor copper contacts, flat grey cat5e cable is now used to connect each of these sockets, uses a proven SP rocker switch with neon indicator and fits all of this into an 86×86mm wall plate. The moving parts of these sockets are made of red copper bus-bar and the switch activation part uses Φ3.5mm×0.35mm silver alloy, which will also act on the part of the contact points, therefore providing consistent grip force for all repeated plugging in of plugs. The extended lifespan of 15,000 cycles translates to over twenty (20) years of average household use. The sockets have been manufactured by a specialist in high phosphor copper sockets and have been supplied in four (4) different high clarity imported PC panel colours -White, Gold, Grey and Black; therefore matching any R16 series wiring accessory. There are two (2) options for the centre panel of each of these sockets; they have been tested for compliance to IEC 60884 standard, with a manufacturer’s warranty of twelve (12) years.
We are a factory-direct British standard socket manufacturer offering competitive wholesale pricing, OEM branding on any color PC panel, and a 12‑year warranty across the R16 series range.
Phosphor Copper vs 62 Brass Socket Contacts — Why the Contact Material Matters
| Feature | R16407M (Phosphor Copper) | R16407 (62 Brass) |
|---|---|---|
| Socket Contact Material | 0.7mm high phosphor copper | 0.7mm high purity 62 brass |
| Key Property | Superior elasticity — maintains grip longer | Good conductivity — standard UK socket material |
| Best For | High‑use locations — hotels, offices, kitchens | Standard residential — living rooms, bedrooms |
| Certification | IEC 60884 | IEC 60884 / BS1363 |
Although both of these 13A switched sockets provide the same functions, there is one significant difference between them: the type of contact material in the sockets. Phosphor copper has much more elasticity than brass, resulting in its ability to maintain spring tension and grip on pins through many insertion cycles without the gradual relaxation that brass contacts experience as they age. Therefore, the R16407M phosphor copper multi‑switched socket has been designed for multiple use areas, such as hotel rooms, office desks, commercial kitchens, or locations where plugs are inserted and removed frequently. In addition, the integrated structure copper design helps improve conductivity by reducing resistance at the contact junction. The R16407 with 62 brass contacts will be a cost‑effective option for typical home installations. It would be wise for you to carry both types to provide your customers with an upgrade.
Matching the R16 Series — Phosphor Copper Upgrade Within the Same Aesthetic
The white PC switched socket featured here falls into the R16 range of socket outlets with standard 86×86mm layout and uses the same high-transparency imported PC material and four different colour combinations as all of the other R16 devices. The R16407M uses phosphor copper as its contact material, in contrast to standard R16407 which uses brass contacts. The external appearance of both sockets is identical, however; the contact material is a substantial upgrade from brass if the socket will be used in a harsher environment than normal homes will have. The R16407M is available in four colours – white, gold, grey & black – with the option of two different middle plates, either full plastic (standard installations) or a steel-plastic combination (additional stiffness). The R16407M phosphor copper socket is certified to IEC 60884 and carries a twelve-year warranty from the R16407M phosphor copper socket manufacturer.

R16407M vs R16407: Choosing the Right 13A Switched Socket — Phosphor Copper or 62 Brass?
A practical guide to selecting the correct socket contact material for different use environments, plus color and middle plate options.
R16407M (Phosphor Copper) vs R16407 (62 Brass) — Which One for Your Project?
Your decision should depend on what you will be using the product for. Phosphor copper (R16407M) material offers high elastic properties; this means the spring tension and gripping ability will remain intact after many more product insertions than the brass equivalent. Use the phosphor copper multi sockets for hotel rooms, workplaces such as an office desk, and, all locations where frequent insertion and removal happen, like restaurants/catering areas. 62 brass (R16407) offers good conductivity while being a much more affordable option — use in normal residences such as living rooms and/or bedrooms where all of the plugs tend not to come out again for long periods of time. All sockets come with the same 86x86mm dimensions, same R16 color finishes and included 12 year warranty — however, there is a physical upgrade made to each of the internal materials used with no noticeable difference on the outside of the products!
Color Selection — White, Gold, Gray, or Black?
White PC panel: All four of the classic British Essential finishes are suitable for residential and commercial applications.
Gold – adds a touch of warmth (a high-grade finish) to residential installation and hotels.
Grey – a neutral finish for contemporary residential apartments and office spaces.
Black – creates a dramatic contrast against darker all, and is commonly used for creating premium commercial spaces.
All four colours are constructed using the same imported, high-translucency Polycarbonate (PC) structure and phosphor copper socket contacts.
Installation Note
This is a standard size for a 86x86mm back box as used in the UK electrical system. The usual wiring is as follows: line into common terminal of switch; line out from the switch (L1) to the line in on the socket; neutral and earth directly onto the socket terminals. The neon indicator is wired internally and does not need any extra connections. Socket contacts are copper phosphor which will accept all standard BS1363 3 pin plugs that are equipped with internal safety shuttering. All products are certified to IEC 60884.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a multi switched socket?
The multi switched socket is a wall-mounted electrical outlet that contains an integrated rocker switch, which allows the user to control the actual power of the socket itself. The R16407M multi switched socket is compliant with the United Kingdom’s(UK) standard 13A regulations, and has a neon indicator to show if power is present when switching the socket on or off, with “multi” representing the combined ‘switch’, ‘socket’ and ‘neon’ in one unit. The SP rocker switch isolates local power from the socket and illuminates the neon when the socket has power.
What is the difference between phosphor copper and brass socket contacts?
Compared to brass, phosphor copper possesses better elasticity; therefore, it will retain its spring tension and pin grip through significantly more insert cycles without undergoing the constant gradual relaxation that characterizes brass contacts. For facilities with high usage, such as hotel rooms, office desks, and commercial kitchens, phosphor copper is therefore the better option than brass. Although brass is a good conductor at a much lower cost than other options, it is the material of choice for most residential electrical fixtures. The R16407M is made from .7 mm high phosphor copper and the R16407 is made from .7 mm high pure (62) brass.
Is this socket compatible with standard UK plugs?
The R16407M has been designed to be compatible with most of the current UK three-pin fused plugs, which must have their internal live & neutral safety shutters present. It can be connected to both ring main and radial circuit types, having a 13A @ 250V rating. The visual aspect of the R16407M and R16407 is the same, but the only difference from the R16407 is the internal contact material; it uses phosphor bronze copper instead of brass for its contacts.
What colors is this British standard phosphor copper switched socket available in?
Additionally, the R16 multi switched socket series is offered with Phosphor Copper contacts in four PC panel colors (White, Gold, Grey and Black). The White socket is thought of as the classic color for residential or commercial buildings; whereas the Gold color provides a nice warm premium finish for high-end interiors; and the Grey color provides a neutral contemporary look, perfect for modern apartments or offices; lastly, the Black socket, looks good against a dark background and works well in high-end commercial fit-outs. All four color options are made from the same imported high-transparent, high-strength PC material and will have the same factory 12-year warranty.
